Major North American cities now in the process of building Wi-Fi hotspot networks include Philadelphia and San Francisco. Here in Asia, our neighbor, Taipei, has established more than 4,000 wireless hotspots over the last two years. Now known as the world's most Wi-Fi-enabled city, Taipei has been awarded the coveted "Intelligent Community of the Year 2006" Award by the "Intelligent Community Forum" of America's World Teleport Association.
Creating a "perfect Wi-Fi state"
Those living in, or visiting a well-covered Wi-Fi city can connect to the Internet anytime, anywhere. Motorists can also access the Internet and download digital roadmaps to make their journeys easier. At the same time, those wishing to make long-distance calls can simply use a VoIP phoneline. When Wi-Fi covers four corners of a city, information can be updated at any time, significantly reducing distances and bringing people closer together.
Hong Kong moves towards citywide Wi-Fi
Hong Kong International Airport, coffee-shop chains, shopping malls, leading hotels and various entertainment locations are among the many locations where Wi-Fi hotspots can be found easily. Ultimately, Hong Kong will boast more than 3,000* hotspots that will support multimedia functions and enable people to browse the Internet without limitation and enjoy the added convenience and fun of outdoor connectivity.
*Scheduled to be up and running during July, 2007.
